Regularly practice driving on different routes around the vicinity of the testing centre to build confidence and understanding of the road conditions.

Utilise your indicators properly, signaling your intentions to other road users in advance. Adhere to all road signs and rules, particularly stop signs, as neglecting them could lead to test failure. Lastly, demonstrate decisive gap selection in traffic – your ability to do this shows the examiner your competence and confidence as a driver.

The on road driving test assesses your driving skills, decision making, awareness of other road users, and how you share the road with other traffic. If you pass the test you progress from a Learners licence to a P1 licence.

How To Pass the Driving Test in NSW & Avoid Common Mistakes

A great way to improve your chances of passing the test is to learn the common driving mistakes that people make in the test.

Whilst there are 18 fail items listed on the driving test score sheet the vast majority fail for the following reason.

Required Observation Checks

This is by far the most common fail item in a driving test at any test location. Three mistakes in this category will result in a fail for your driving test. Therefore it is essential that you know what your required observation checks are.

Blind spot checks are classified as a required observation check in the driving test. However blind spot checks are not the only required observation checks in a driving test.

Do you know when you are required to check your blind spots? Furthermore do you know when you are required to make an observation check whilst driving a car. It will be hard for you to pass the driving test if you do not know when you have to make a required observation check.

Signalling Intention

This is another category in the driving test where 3 mistakes will result in a fail. Therefore if you fail to signal your intention on 3 or more occasions it will be recorded as a fail item.

In order to avoid a signal error in the driving test you need to signal at the right time and for long enough. Generally speaking the minimum amount of time will depend on the situation. For example you must signal for at least 5 seconds before leaving a parking space.

In addition to having your indicator on for long enough you also have to indicate at the right time. For example putting your indicator on too early will create confusion for other drivers. This could be dangerous and you will be marked down for it. Remember doing anything that is dangerous can result in a fail for the driving test.

Stop and Give Way Procedures

The driving test is designed to test your ability to drive safely. Failing to stop at a stop sign or give way when required is dangerous and illegal. Anytime you do anything that is dangerous or illegal is an immediate fail in the NSW driving test.

Therefore failing to stop at a stop sign is an immediate fail. A lot of people slow down for stop signs and then when they can see that there are no cars they keep going. You must stop behind the stop line and your car must be stationery. After you have stopped behind the stop line, if your vision is obstructed and it is safe, you can move forward to improve your vision.

A lot of people also fail the NSW driving test for not stopping when required at pedestrian crossings. When there is a pedestrian at a marked pedestrian crossing with a stop line you must stop behind the line. You can not stop on the line or in front of the line.

Decision Making

It is rare to see a person complete a driving test without losing points or failing for poor decision making. You are required to make good decisions  and follow the road rules. Everyone knows that you are not allowed to speed or that you have to obey the road signs including traffic lights.

Yet a lot of people fail for speeding or disobeying traffic lights including going through red lights. How can this be surely everyone knows that it is illegal to speed.

Unfortunately a lot of people get nervous in the driving test or distracted whilst they are driving. You need to focus on what you are doing now and you need to think about what is coming up in the next 12 seconds whilst you are driving. You need to think about what you are doing and what you need to do next.

Gap Selection

When you are driving you will need to decide if the gap is big enough for you to go. You make these decisions every time you turn a corner, change lanes, or decide to go at a stop sign or a give way sign.

In order to make this type of decision you have to estimate the speed and distance of other vehicles. In addition you have to estimate how long it will take you to complete your manoeuvre.

You need to complete your manoeuvre without entering the other vehicles crash avoidance space. Some learner drivers who are inexperienced at gap selection will pull out in front of another vehicle that is too close. Which would result in a fail for the driving test because they did not give way to the other vehicle.

Alternatively an inexperience driver would have a big enough gap to go and complete the manoeuvre safely. But they will hesitate and then go at the last second, when the gap was no longer big enough.
