Preparing for Driving Test

Preparing for the driving test is like preparing for any other test. If you prepare properly for it then you will find it easier to pass.

The driving test can be broadly defined as testing you on two components which are the road rules and driving safely. It is easy to pass the driving test when you have a good understanding of these two concepts and you can apply them in real life situations. Which often involves assessing the conditions of the road and applying the road rules and safe driving techniques. However if you do not know how to drive safely or how to apply the road rules you will find it very difficult to make thee right decisions and pass the driving test.

Unfortunately too many people do not learn the correct way to drive. They spend a lot of time driving around and completing the required 120 log book hours, but they don’t learn safe driving techniques or develop good decision making skills. If you do not know the road rules or you do not know how to apply safe driving techniques you are unlikely to pass the test. It is much better to Learn To Drive the right way.

Nothing beats practice, so get as much practice as you can, but make sure you are practicing to drive the correct way. Their is no point continuing to practice bad driving techniques in fact by continually practicing bad driving techniques you will only make it harder for you to change your bad habits later. You will be much better off if you simply get some lessons with a good driving instructor and learn to drive properly.

During the driving test you will be tested on all aspects of driving including steering, blind spots, vision, low risk driving, cornering, road position, roundabouts, traffic lights and so on. So learn each topic you will be tested on and then practice it. At Learn To Drive we provide each student with a list of topics that they can be tested on. We also provide a written assessment of the students competency in each topic.

Tips on Preparing for the Driving Test

The most important thing is to learn how to drive properly. This involves learning the correct techniques for things like scanning and steering. Right now ask yourself how do I scan properly and how do I steer properly. Then ask yourself how do they mark my scanning and steering in the driving test.

Learn how to Drive Properly from a qualified driving instructor. Make sure you know the following

  1. Scanning if you do not scan properly you will not be able to pass the test. A lot of people fail the test by not stopping at stop signs or speeding. The fact is everyone doing the test knows they have to stop at stop signs. They also know they are not allowed to speed. Yet they fail the test because they did not scan properly and they did not notice the signs
  2. Learn the road rules and how to apply them properly. A lot of people fail the driving test for creating a dangerous situation or failing to give way. The fact is most people do not know the road rules, so make sure you learn them.
  3. Do the Safer Driver Course if you live in New South Wales it will help you become a safer driver and you will learn a lot of things that will help you in the driving test. Such as gap selection, speed management, decision making and hazard perception.

Nerves or Anxiety

Everyone gets nervous before the test and everyone handles nerves differently. Do whatever it is you normally do to overcome your anxiety about the test. Remember that you have learnt how to drive the correct way and you have practiced the correct driving techniques. Take a deep breath and try to relax.

During the test make sure you concentrate on the part of the test you are currently doing. If you think you made a mistake do not dwell on it. You can not change the past. The best thing you can do is focus on what you are doing now and show the testing officer that you are a good driver.

Preparing for Driving Test NSW

Regardless of how quickly you pick up driving, preparing for Driving Test NSW is not something you can rush. Too often learner drivers take short cuts in their preparations for the driving test. Which results in their failing the test or having to relearn certain driving techniques.

When learning to drive you need to develop a number of skill sets that you have not previously required. An example of this is knowing the road rules. Until you decide to get a drivers licence you don’t really need to know many road rules. In fact there are a lot of road rules that most people are blissfully unaware of. Therefore you will need to improve your knowledge of the road rules before you will be able to pass the driving test.

Before you can adequately prepare for the driving test you will need to identify the things you need to improve upon. Whilst most learner drivers can easily identify certain things that they need to practice like reverse parking or steering. There are a lot of things that you will need to learn and a lot of skills that you will need to develop that are less obvious. Everything that you do not prepare for is another thing you can fail for in the driving test.

A great way to prepare for the driving test is to take a driving lesson with a good instructor. Who will identify some things you need to improve upon. Then when you improved your driving take a practice driving test.

Prepare for the Driving Test NSW – Know what is in the Test

If you read some of our other blogs you will get a better idea of what is in the test. You will also learn how the examiners mark the driving test. Good driving schools will provide you with a list of the things you can be tested on. Make sure you understand what you need to know and what you need to be able to do in the driving test. Some of the skill sets you will require to pass the driving test include

Spatial Awareness:

This involves being aware of oneself in relation to other people, objects and devices. When you are driving a car you need to be aware of your position relative to other things like the gutter, lane markers, pedestrians and other cars. This is difficult when you consider that the other cars may be travelling at 60km/h or more. The reality is you are highly unlikely to have ever ran at 60 km/h or rode a push bike at 60 km/h. Therefore you have no experience at judging your position relative to the other vehicle at these speeds.

Another example of difficulties experience by learner drivers in relation to spatial awareness occurs when you have to pull over and stop the car. When you do this you have to estimate where the gutter is and where the side of the car is. As part of the driving test you are required to get close and parallel to the kerb. Unfortunately you do not have X-Ray vision therefore you can not see through the car to actually know where the gutter is. This means you require good spatial awareness to know where your front left hand wheel is relative to the gutter.

If you do not develop good spatial awareness this can result in you failing the driving test for failing to park to the required standard.

Gap Selection:

This is a critical element of being able to drive safely and it involves judging the speed and distance of other vehicles. Which can be difficult because you will not be able to use a speed camera to know for sure how fast the other car is travelling. In addition to that you will need to be able to accurately estimate how long it will take you to complete the turn.

Decision Making

Arguably the hardest thing to learn for most students. First you need to know what the road rules are. Then you need to know low risk driving techniques. To pass the driving test you need to demonstrate that you can drive safely and abide by the road rules. This means you need to make good decisions in real life situations.
